General Information

The National Counselor Exam (NCE) is an exam used for the purpose of granting certification as a National Certified Counselor (NCC) to graduate-level counselors by the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC).  All states in the United States use the NCE as part of their credentialing process for professional counseling licensure. The NCE tests a candidate’s understanding of basic counseling concepts in the areas of human development, fundamental counseling techniques, appraisal, ethics, research, group counseling and career development counseling. The content included on the NCE remains general and all counselors, regardless of their area of clinical focus, should know and understand it.

Eligibility

Those wishing to sit for the NCE must have completed a graduate program in counseling or a related field, and must have been conferred a graduate degree by that institution.  In order to take the NCE, an official, sealed transcript confirming your degree attainment must be sent with your NCE registration form.
