South Dakota Electrician Exam

Electrician Practice Need of a License: Master and journeyman electricians need a license to work in ­­South Dakota.
 
Who Grants a License:  Electrician licenses are granted by the South Dakota Electrical Commission.
 
Qualifications Needed to Receive a License:
 
Electrical Contractor: A candidate must have 6 years’ experience, 2 of them as a journeyman electrician.  The candidate must also pledge an understanding deposit of $10,000 as well as a yearly $50 undertaking fee.
 
Journeyman Electrician: A candidate must have at least 4 years’ experience, 1½ years of which may be obtained at a recognized trade school. A biennial license renewal fee of $40 is required.
 
Exam Requirements:  A candidate for a master electrician license or a journeyman electrician license must pass the Master Electrician Examination or the Journeyman Electrician Examination, respectively.
 
How to Apply for a License:  A candidate for licensure must complete/send an application to the South Dakota Electrical Commission. The telephone to reach the commission is 800.233.7765 or 605.773.3573.
