West Virginia Life and Health Insurance Exam

Need of a License: An individual who is acting as an agent or producer needs a license to sell life and health insurance in West Virginia.

Who Grants a License: Licenses are granted by the West Virginia Offices of the Insurance Commissioner.

Qualifications to receive a License
: Individuals who wish to obtain an insurance license in the State of West Virginia:
 
1. Be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
2. Be a resident of West Virginia.
3. Complete the pre-licensing education requirements.
4. Make a reservation and pay the examination fee.
5. Pass the examination.
6. Apply for a license.
 
Prelicense Education Requirements: A list of prelicense education providers is available on the insurance commissioner’s website.

Applying for the Producer Exam:  It is highly recommended that the West Virginia Insurance Licensing Candidate Handbook be reviewed, and special attention be given to the content outlines (available at www.pearsonvue.com), before taking an examination. The State of West Virginia utilizes Pearson VUE to develop and administer its insurance licensing examination program. Online reservations are the most efficient way for candidates to schedule their examination. Candidates must go to www.pearsonvue.com/wv/insurance to make an online reservation for an examination. Candidates may call (800) 274-2614 to make an exam reservation by phone.
 
Test Information: A scaled score of 70 is required to pass the exam. The West Virginia Insurance Licensing Candidate Handbook contains specific content information beyond the following general outlines:

How to Apply for the License: An applicant must submit to the West Virginia Insurance Commissioner the following:
1. Completed Resident Agent Application
2. Original Pearson VUE passing score report
3. Original Certificate of Pre-licensing Course Completion (PL 789E)
4. License fee made payable to the West Virginia Insurance Commissioner
5. Letter of Clearance, if applicable

License Renewal Requirements: Individual Producer licenses must be renewed every two years and there is a continuing education requirement.
