A woman is driving 90 miles per hour on a highway with a 55 mph speed limit.
131. If the driver is fined $30 for each mile per hour over the speed limit, what is the total fine?
Incorrect. Please choose another answer.
Subtract 90 mph from 55 mph to find the total mph the woman was driving (90 - 55 = 35 mph). Multiply 35 mph by the $30.00 fine for driving over the speed limit to get the total fine of $1,050.
132. The driver is additionally required to pay a court fee of $150.00 dollars. What is the amount of the court costs and the fine for speeding?
Incorrect. Please choose another answer.
Take the sum of the speeding fine ($1,050) and add $150.00.
133. Officers use Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) to measure the percent concentration of alcohol in a person's bloodstream. Most states consider a BAC of 0.08 illegal to operate a motor vehicle. Each hour after drinking, a person's BAC may decrease by 15%. If a driver has a BAC of 0.20, how many hours must they wait until they can legally drive?
Incorrect. Please choose another answer.
To legally drive, a driver's BAC must be under .08. If a driver starts with a BAC of .2, he must wait a certain amount of time until the alcohol is out of his system sufficient to be below a .08 BAC. If a BAC decreases at 15% per hour, a calculation must be made, starting with a BAC of .2 which takes it down to .08 over time. it's easier to see the math when we convert the BACs to integers .2 to 20 and .08 to 8, where you have to get below 8 to drive again.

20 is decreased by 15% (.15) of 20, which is 20 - 3 = 17 BAC (1st hour)
17 x .15 = 2.55
17 - 2.55 = 14.45 BAC (2nd hour)
14.45 x .15 = 2.16
14.45 – 2.16 = 12.29 (3rd hour)
12.29 x .15 = 1.84
12.29 – 1.84 = 10.45 (4th hour)
10.45 x .15 = 1.56
10.45 – 1.56 = 8.89 (5th hour)
8.89 x .15 = 1.33
8.89 – 1.33 = 7.56 (6th hour)
7.56 is below 8, so it will take 6 hours for a .2 BAC to decrease to .08.
134. Officers pull over a suspect for speeding. Officers notice empty beer cans on the passenger seat. The driver admits he was drinking, but waited 4 hours to safely drive. He consents to have his BAC taken, and his reading is .06. If one hour decreases a person's BAC by 15%, what was the driver's blood alcohol content four hours earlier, before he drove?
Incorrect. Please choose another answer.
This problem requires one to reverse a BAC back four hours.  To solve this problem, an algebraic equation is needed where x is the BAC one hour earlier.  If x is reduced by 15% (.15) each hour, the equation is as follows:

x - .15x = BAC one hour later
To start the look back in this scenario, set up the equation to equal .06 and take each step back an hour.
x - .15x = .06
.85x =.06
x = .07 (1st hour)
x - .15x = .07
.85x = .07
x = .08 (2nd hour)
x – 15x = .08
.85x = .08
x = .09 (3rd hour)
x – .15x = .09
.85x = .09
x = .11 (4th hour)
Therefore, the driver's BAC four hours earlier was .11.
135. There is one resource officer for every 1,500 students. If a county has 50,000 students, how many resource officers are there for the county?

136. A city employs seven part-time reserve police officers. The city pays an average of $19,000 to four of the officers, $15,000 to two of the officers, and a salary of $12,000 to one officer. Which of the following is closest to the average salary of the seven officers?
Incorrect. Please choose another answer.
First, find the average salary of the seven officers. 19,000 x 4 = 76,000 and 15,000 x 2 = 30,000. Add the values together 76,000 + 30,000 + 12,000 and divide the sum by 7 to get the average. The average is $16,857. The closest value in the answer options is $16,660.
137. A sheriff's department has 48 employees that work in the patrol division. The patrol division constitutes 2/5ths of the total staff in the sheriff's department. How many employees does the sheriff's department have?
Incorrect. Please choose another answer.
If you have the total number of one division of a department and know its ratio to the whole department, you can set up an algebraic equation to find the total population of the organization.

With x being the total number in the organization, 2/5ths multiplied by x will equal 48.

2x / 5 = 48
2x = 5 x 48
x = 240 / 2
x = 120
138. If a suspect is arrested with 9 or more grams of methamphetamine, it is considered to be a crime of possession for sale which is a more severe crime than possession. How many .25 gram baggies of meth would a suspect need to be caught with to be considered a possession for sale?

In 8 more years, Officer Garcia will have twenty years as a police officer. If he must work five years past the 8 to obtain the $25,000, that equals 13 more years.
144. Police respond to a tip of a drug deal that is going to take place out of town at noon. If two officers leave at 10:00 AM, coming from opposite sides of town, one travelling at a speed of 60 miles per hour travelling 75 miles and the other at 55 miles per hour travelling 25 miles, at what time will both officers be at the location to apprehend the drug deal?
Incorrect. Please choose another answer.
To answer this problem, the first step is to determine the amount of time it will take each officer to get to the destination. To determine Time, use the following formula:

Time = Distance / Rate

Set up an rtd table to determine the amount of time it will take each officer to reach the location of the drug deal:

dTr
Officer A75T60
Officer B25T50

Officer A: T = 75/60
T = 1.25 - It will take Officer A one hour and 15 minutes to get to the destination.

Officer B: T = 25/50
T = ½ or .5 - It will take Officer B a half hour to get to the destination.

The question asks when will both officers be at the location. If they both left at the same time, as the question indicates, Officer A will get there last, one hour and 15 minutes after she left at 10:00 AM. Therefore, add one hour and fifteen minutes to solve the problem: 11:15 AM.
145. A police vehicle traveling at an average rate of 50 miles per hour made the trip to a police training in 6 hours. If the officer traveled at 45 miles per hour, how many more minutes would it have taken to make the trip?
Incorrect. Please choose another answer.
Set up an rtd table.

rTd
   Case 1506
   Case 245T

Fill in the values for d using the formula d = rt

rTd
  Case 150 650 x 6 = 300
  Case 245 T45t

Since the distances traveled in both cases are the same, the equation is:
45t = 300
Isolate variable t
t = 300/45= 6 2/3

The question asks how many more minutes would it have taken to make the trip. Subtract the original 6 hours taken.

6 2/3 - 6 = 2/3 hours = 40 minutes
146. A suspect heads east on the freeway at 60 mph. Fifteen minutes later, police receive the call and leave from the same point, heading onto the freeway at 75 mph. How long before officers meet up with the suspect's car?

Find x.
60 x + 15 = 75 x
15 = 15x
x = 1 hour
147. Two different S.W.A.T teams in the county are to set up perimeters for a major drug seizure at two locations 210 miles apart. If the two teams leave at 8 A.M. and the first S.W.A.T team heads east at 50 miles per hour and the second S.W.A.T team heads west at 55 miles per hour, how long will it take for the two teams to be 210 miles apart at the two locations?
Incorrect. Please choose another answer.
To determine how far apart moving objects are, that go in the opposite directions, use a Distance, Rate and Time table, as follows:

rtd
Vehicle 150t50t
Vehicle 255t55t

50t mph + 55t mph = 210 miles
105t mph = 210 miles
t = 210 miles/105 mph = 2 hours
148. Car A and Car B were drag racing when Car B crashed. You have to determine how close Car A was to Car B when it crashed.  Car A and Car B started from the same location on a road and raced for 5 minutes before the crash occurred.  Car A had a better start than Car B but at 2 minutes into the race the cars were neck and neck when they passed a gas station, with Car A going 90 kmph and Car B going 100 kmph.  What was the approximate distance in meters that separated the vehicles at the time of the crash?
Incorrect. Please choose another answer.
To determine the distance between two moving objects going in the same direction, we use the Distance, Time and Rate formula and find the relative speed between the vehicles. The speed of one object with respect to another is called relative speed.

The relative speed between Car A and Car B is represented as follows:  100 kmph - 90 kmph = 10 kmph.

The race lasted 5 minutes but the vehicles did not reach their top speed until 2 minutes into the race.  That means they sustained their top speed for 3 minutes (5 minutes – 2 minutes = 3 minutes).

To determine the distance traveled in 3 minutes, we use the formula Distance = Rate x Time using the relative speed.

D = 10 kmph x 3 min./60 min
D = 30 k per minute / 60 min
D = .5 k

k = 1000 meters
.5 k will be 500 meters.

Approximately 500 meters separated the vehicles at the time of the crash.

Another way to solve this problem is as follows:

1 kmph = 5 meters/18 seconds
10 kmph = 10 (5/18) = 2.78 meters/sec.

3 minutes = 180 seconds

180 sec x 2.78 meters/sec = 500.4 meters

This confirms our answer.
149. Officers pulled over a woman for going 75 mph in an area where the posted speed limit is 50 mph. There is a $25.00 fine for each mile exceeding the speed limit. How much should officers fine the woman?
Incorrect. Please choose another answer.
75 mph - 50 mph = 25 mph over the speed limit

156. The odds that a burglary occurs on 1st street during the five-day work week is 5%. Since there are 5 days in an officer's rotation week, the odds that it is Thursday is 20%. What is the probability that there will be a burglary on 1st Street on Thursday?
Incorrect. Please choose another answer.
Use the formula P(A + B) = P(A) x P(B/A), where P means "the probability of" and A and B are the dependent events that must occur together.

P(B/A) means the probability of B, once A happens.

Step 1 - Convert the percentages of the two events to decimals.
5% - .05
20% - .2

Step 2 - Multiply the decimals from Step 1.
.05 x .2 = .01

Step 3 - Convert the result back into a percentage
.01 = 1%

IncidentYardFeetInches
1126
2214
3428
Total7518

The sum of the damage is equal to 7 yards, 5 feet and 18 inches in square inches. To get the answer solely in square inches, we first need to reduce the yards to feet and then the feet to inches.  Converting yards to feet is 7 yards x 3 feet per yard equals 21 feet. Total feet is 21 + 5 or 26 feet. Next, convert inches to feet: 18 inches equals 1 foot, 6 inches. Add the totals to get 27 feet, 6 inches in total area in square inches.

To find the answer in square inches, multiple 27 feet by 12 inches per foot to get 324 square inches.  Add the remaining  6 square inches to get 330 square inches as the final answer.

  • There will be a rest period of five (5) minutes between tests.
  • Each test must be successfully completed in order to progress to the next test.
Kneel/Stand Test

The Kneel/Stand Test contains all shooting positions required to pass the Firearms portion of instruction at the Academy as well as the quarterly weapon requalification requirement for the department. This exam consists of 8 changes of position, an extended period (3 minutes) of upright kneeling, followed by the final position change. The test is administered as one continuous test, with two parts, which are timed separately. The initial 8 changes must be completed within 30 seconds, and are immediately followed by two minutes of kneeling and then coming to a full standing position. Throughout the test you will be required to hold both arms extended in front of you as if holding a firearm. An audiotape will provide verbal cues so you do not have to memorize the sequence of position changes.

Push-up Test

This is a timed test, requiring you to complete 15 proper form push-ups within 2 minutes. Rests between push-ups, if needed, must be taken in the “up position.” The Test Administrator will evaluate your form during the test and will instruct you when to start and stop. Incorrectly executed push-ups will not be counted.

Step Test

This is a timed test, requiring you to step up and down on a 16" high step at a rate of 60 steps per minute for a total time of two (2) minutes duration. A CD, containing a constant beat and verbal cues, is used to maintain the cadence.

Before 1963, most individuals either did not know or could not recite all the rights they possessed. This led to many court cases and instances where suspects spoke to police without proper attorney representation. Before 1963, it was the police’s position that if a person accused of a crime spoke about a crime without knowledge of their rights, then the risk of not knowing one’s rights was on them, not on the police.

This led to the 1963 court case Miranda vs. Arizona. A man, Ernesto Miranda, was accused of raping and kidnapping an 18-year-old girl. When brought in for questioning, the police were able to obtain a confession from Ernesto, but he had not been advised of his right to remain silent or that he could have an attorney present during questioning.

When the case came to trial, a motion to suppress the confession was denied by the trial court and he was subsequently convicted.  Ernesto appealed the conviction.  In 1966, the United States Supreme Court ruled that the confession could not be used as evidence, since Ernesto was not aware or had not been given his rights.

Nowadays, the police must advise suspects of their rights when they are suspected of a crime and taken into custody. They must be told that they have the right to remain silent and have a right to have an attorney present when they are questioned. Different departments may utilize the Miranda warnings in various ways, but the key elements must be advised.  Not all police stops require the giving of Miranda rights. Police can ask and expect someone to answer simple questions such as name, address, social security number, and driver license number without being “mirandized.”

As for Ernesto Miranda, he was not freed. Although his conviction was overturned by the Supreme Court, the police had other evidence to convict him in a second trial, separate from the confession. Upon being released from prison in 1976, Miranda was killed in a barroom fight. His court cases paved the way for how law enforcement and other agencies conduct themselves in investigations and with the general public.
220. How did Miranda warnings receive its current name?
Incorrect. Please choose another answer.
The name of the warnings comes from the defendant in the case of Miranda vs. Arizona, Ernesto Miranda.
221. What is the central issue of this passage?
Incorrect. Please choose another answer.
The main theme of this passage is what police should do before questioning a suspect. Before Mirada vs. Arizona, police did not tell a suspect that he had rights to remain silent and to have an attorney present at questioning. The suspect assumed the risk of not knowing his or her rights. After Miranda vs. Arizona, the police have a duty to tell a suspect of his or her rights before questioning. If police do not fulfill this duty, a confession may not be used at trial.
222. According to the passage, which of the following questions by police would require a Miranda warning if directed at a suspect of a crime and where there is a desire by the police to use any statement as evidence at trial?
Incorrect. Please choose another answer.
According to the passage, the police may ask for and get a response from a suspect about one's social security number, name, and address without being read Miranda warnings. However, a question like "How are you connected to the crime?", which has the ability to lead to a confession must be preceded with Miranda warnings if it is to be used as evidence at trial.
223. What type of court is the United States Supreme Court?
Incorrect. Please choose another answer.
The United States Supreme Court is an appeals court. The passage says the trial court's conviction was appealed to the Supreme Court.
224. If the Supreme Court overturned defendant's conviction in 1966, why was he not released from prison until 1976?
Incorrect. Please choose another answer.
Although the original conviction was overturned, the passage states that the police had enough evidence without the confession to convict Miranda in a second trial. The passage states that he was not freed but stayed in prison until 1976. It can be inferred that the defendant was in jail due to the sentence resulting from the second trial.
225. Which of the following accurately expresses the view of this passage on the state of the law?
Incorrect. Please choose another answer.
This passage takes the view that the law is an evolving process where, over time, society comes to understand better ways to ensure that our rights are upheld by the government.
Police officers face harrowing realities. They are often the first on scene to respond to life threatening situations. They are exposed to horrific homicides, burglaries and rape incidents. Their skills must include using deductive and analytical thought processes to access and read people. In a given day, their interactions include working with detectives, victims, DEA agents, suspects and the general public. The dangers of law enforcement are numerous. One out of twenty-five officers will be involved in a deadly shooting situation in their career, and the emotional and physical stress is sometimes difficult for the officers and their families to face. However, as there are responsibilities, there are rewards for those involved in law enforcement. Police officers can take satisfaction that their work served the welfare of their community in sustaining and protecting the common good.
226. If there are 75 officers in a police department, how many of them on average will face a deadly shooting incident during the course of their careers based on the information provided by the passage?
Incorrect. Please choose another answer.
The passage states that one out of twenty-five officers will face a deadly shooting incident during the course of their career. If there are 75 police officers in a department, three of them will face a deadly shooting incident based on the average stated in the passage.
227. Of the groups of persons named in the passage that interact with an officer on a daily basis, which group would pose a threat to the officer?
Incorrect. Please choose another answer.
Police officers interact with a variety of people on a daily basis. Of the groups listed, only suspects are likely to prove to be a threat to the officer, as the officer would likely face a situation where he or she has to take the suspect into custody.
When patrol car mounted video cameras were first introduced, they were met with skepticism and almost complete rejection by the many officers who would implement them. The biggest factor behind the rejection was that the request for cameras was based on the public’s negative projection that cops want or need to use force to diffuse difficult situations. Officers did not want to be watched at all times, especially where their actions could somehow be spun into a misrepresentation of how they conduct themselves on duty.

However, an interesting result happened. Instead of putting more strain on the law enforcement community, the cameras started saving officers’ jobs.  The New Jersey State Police, claimed by anti-police groups as being overly aggressive and brash, used car mounted video cameras, and the perception of officer awareness increased almost overnight. With proof that officers were conducting themselves as the professionals they had always claimed, the department started being cleared of wrongful accusations at a much higher rate than before the cameras were utilized. In 2000, a total of 584 complaints were received involving officer misconduct. Over ten percent of these complaints were cleared by the Office of Professional Standards based on the use of a camera.

Surprisingly, the very thing officers were afraid of (the public spinning an officer’s conduct into a combative and/or unnecessary use of force) showed the general publics’ bias and wrongful claims about officers. It showed that a number of citizen complaints were without merit and some filed with the malicious intent of making officers look bad or to diffuse a traffic violation. Many officers who were once afraid of the “Big Brother” concept, where the state watches their every move, are thankful to have car mounted video cameras in their units to accurately depict the situations and their conduct.

Nowadays, most police departments have car mounted units to keep officers safe and protected. Now that citizens are aware of car mounted vehicles, they cannot get away with filing false complaints, and officers cannot get away with misconduct or wrongful action. Car mounted cameras seem to be a win-win for law enforcement agencies and the general public. High tech cameras are protection for law enforcement officers.
228. Why were officers skeptical of using a patrol camera at first?
Incorrect. Please choose another answer.
The aspect of cameras being used to spin stories to negatively reflect police work concerned police officers.
229. What happened to the New Jersey State Police after patrol cameras were installed?
Incorrect. Please choose another answer.
According to the passage, after patrol cameras were installed, the department was cleared of complaints at a higher rate than before the cameras were installed.
230. According to the passage, which of the following would be "Big Brother"?
Incorrect. Please choose another answer.
According to the passage, the Big Brother concept concerns the state watching a person's actions.
231. This passage is about which of the following type of police cameras?
Incorrect. Please choose another answer.
The passage only discusses the history of patrol mounted cameras.
232. Of the following, which is a possible number of cases cleared by the Office of Professional Standards in the year 2000 due to patrol camera presence?
Incorrect. Please choose another answer.
The passage states that over 10% of the complaints of police misconduct were cleared based on the use of the camera in the year 2000. In 2000, there were 584 complaints in total. Therefore, the number of complaints cleared has to be over 58.
There is nothing more nerve racking and intimidating in the law enforcement world than possibly the oral interview. It’s make it or break it time, and while some agencies are more relaxed than others, as a whole, you can expect a totally intimidating and challenging oral interview, instead of a casual, informal chatfest with your potential employer. You can expect a panel of the scariest individuals in law enforcement to all question you, challenge you and put fear into you.  Relax, you’ve got this covered. Remember, this is their job to see how you handle pressure, and if you’ll run for the hills screaming.  It’s their job to make sure you’re ready for this line of work. While there is no one single remedy to conquer the Achilles heel of the hiring process, your best strategy is to be as mentally prepared as possible.

Before you start clamming up at the mere thought of an oral interview, consider what you’re going to wear, and put your best foot forward, literally.  This is go-time. Men and women should wear nothing less than a clean pressed business suit.  A well-tailored business suit and tie sends the right message about how serious you are about this career.  Throughout the entire hiring process, no member of the department or agency you’re applying for should see you in anything else. Don’t show up in your causal off-work clothes, even if it’s just to go in to fill out some paperwork. Eyes are watching you, and until you’ve established yourselves in the department and know proper department etiquette, carry yourself as a professional. Since you’re trying to become a member of a professional organization, show them what a professional looks like at all times.

Your next move is to practice with oral interview questions.  Utilize practice tests, pamphlets, and the web to find a variety of police oral exam questions. This isn’t just something you do right before the interview. Start preparing a few weeks ahead of time and set aside time each day, from 30 minutes to an hour, to really get a feel for how it will all happen in real life. Utilize family and friends to act as the panel of fear. Taking it seriously, you’ll feel the pressure, and mentally visualize how it will feel to be in front of the real interview panel. Be sure to know where you’re going, get plenty of rest, and find ways to de-stress before the interview. Above all, make sure you look sharp and your suit is freshly pressed.  While you can’t know the exact questions the panel will throw at you, you can rest easy you did everything you could to be as mentally prepared as possible.   Be as cool, calm, and confident as you can be, and remember, this is their job to make you as nervous as possible, to see if you crack under pressure.

249. Use the above sketches to identify the alleged criminal based on eye witness descriptions at the crime scene. One of the four sketches separated by the line shows how the suspect would appear after altering his appearance. Select the face to the right which is most likely to be that of the alleged criminal.

Incorrect. Please choose another answer.
The suspect's distinguishing features are his deep set wrinkles underneath the eyes and forehead. While the other sketches have similar features, suspect (a) only matches the alleged criminal with similar nose features. Suspect (c) has similar lips and nose, but no distinguishing wrinkles. Suspect (d) has similar eyebrows and jaw line as the suspect, but not the matching heavy wrinkles.
The suspect's distinguishing feature is the teardrop tattoo underneath the left eye. While the other suspects might possess similar features, suspect (b) is the only answer choice with a matching tattoo.
251. Use the above sketches to identify the alleged criminal based on eye witness descriptions at the crime scene. One of the four sketches separated by the line shows how the suspect would appear after altering her appearance. Select the face to the right which is most likely to be that of the alleged criminal.

253. Use the above sketches to identify the alleged criminal based on eye witness descriptions at the crime scene. One of the four sketches separated by the line shows how the suspect would appear after altering her appearance. Select the face to the right which is most likely to be that of the alleged criminal.
Incorrect. Please choose another answer.
The suspect's distinguishing feature is a dimpled chin. The other suspects share similar features, but the matching dimple on suspect (d) would be difficult to alter. Suspect (d) also possesses similar brow line, lips and nose features as the alleged criminal.
254. Use the above sketches to identify the alleged criminal based on eye witness descriptions at the crime scene. One of the four sketches separated by the line shows how the suspect would appear after altering her appearance. Select the face to the right which is LEAST likely to be that of the alleged criminal.
Incorrect. Please choose another answer.
This question asks for the least likely match.  Suspect (c)'s bone structure and lips are much different from answer choices (a), (b), and (d). With defined cheek bones, the alleged criminal's facial features would be difficult to alter to resemble suspect (c).
255. In the sketch to the right, what would be the most difficult feature for the wanted suspect to alter?
Incorrect. Please choose another answer.
Changing hairstyle and color, and adding or subtracting facial hair is an easy transformation for criminals. A permanent mark like a tattoo is a distinguishing feature which may be covered up, but for many criminals, a mark like a tattoo is something they are known for and even proud of.
256. Which of the following is the most accurate description of the suspect's features based on the sketch?
Incorrect. Please choose another answer.
The sketch shows a distinguished jaw line and close-set eyes. The other answers misrepresent what the alleged criminal looks like.
257. The first vehicle on the left is a sketch of a vehicle used in a recent crime based on eye witness accounts at the crime scene. It is believed the appearance of the vehicle was subsequently altered to conceal it.  Using the sketches to the right of the description of the crime scene vehicle, select the car that is most likely the vehicle used in the crime. Assume no body work has been attempted on the vehicle, except possible color and tinting alterations.
Incorrect. Please choose another answer.
Vehicle (d) has the same body work, style, and shape as reported by eyewitnesses. The other cars have distinct features and curves which set them apart from the alleged criminal's vehicle.
Vehicle (b) has similar body work, style, and bumper as the alleged criminal's vehicle. Vehicle (a) does not match in style and vehicle-make, vehicle (c)'s body lines are different, and vehicle (d) has too short of archway for tires and rims.
259. The first vehicle on the left is a sketch of a vehicle used in a recent crime based on eye witness accounts at the crime scene. Incorrect. Please choose another answer.
The most effective way to ensure safety and the regular flow of traffic away from the accident would be to close Belvedere Street at Vista Ave. Vista Avenue and Redwood Aves are two-way streets, which connects to others to ensure continued traffic flow. To allow traffic to continue to flow from Vista Ave. onto Belvedere Street would potentially back up the traffic on Vista Ave. and affect surrounding streets. We would not want to close Dover Drive as it is a way to clear Belvedere Street of traffic. Being one way, Dover Drive would not direct traffic to Belvedere Street but away from it.
Use the map to answer the following questions. You may refer to the map as often as needed while answering questions.
271. An officer arrives on the scene of Turner Farms where a farm worker has fallen from the silo. The entrance to the silo is on Wade Street. Which of the following would constitute a longer route for an ambulance to travel if the ambulance is parked on Peach Street at the soccer field?

Problem Sensitivity

281. Police officers respond to a disturbance call at a residence. The call is a report of a man and woman yelling at one another. While at the scene of the incident, the officers notice the woman has several cuts on her arms and face as she apologizes repeatedly for the fact the officers were called to her home in the first place. Some of the cuts are scabbed over, while some are new and still bleeding slightly. When questioned about the cuts, the woman becomes nervous and states she cut herself while trimming bushes in her yard earlier in the day. The man was questioned and he stated that the women fell off of a bike earlier in the day.

Based on the information above, what most likely happened?
Incorrect. Please choose another answer.
The information suggests that the most likely chain of events that led to the woman's injuries was that there was a fight between the woman and the man. The man and the women were heard yelling at each other, the woman had old as well as new cuts, the women became nervous when questioned about her injuries and the man and woman told widely different stories about how the injuries occurred, indicating that they are not telling the truth. The old injuries suggest that there is domestic abuse going on. However, it cannot be determined who initiated the physical contact in this case based on the information given in this incident report.
282. Policy states the number one priority for officers at the scene of a dangerous situation is to ensure the safety of human life. While working downtown, Officer Allen notices construction materials and bricks falling from a high-rise building. A man, wearing a hard helmet, holding a blueprint is across the site at the entrance of a trailer, who looks to be the construction manager. There are several pedestrians on the sidewalk below the high-rise.

Based on the information above what should Officer Allen do first?
Incorrect. Please choose another answer.
Based on police policy and common sense, the first course of action is for the officer to get people away from the falling materials and debris.
283. Deputy Buckley interviews four witnesses to an assault which occurred in a crowded shopping center. Each of the witnesses observed the suspect leaving the scene. His description depicted by the witnesses are:

Witness A: "He is a white or Hispanic man, around 30 years old. He has brown hair and is around six feet tall. I would say he weighs about 190 pounds, maybe 200. He had on khaki shorts, white socks, and a white tank top."

Witness B: "He is a Hispanic male. He is about 25 or 30. He is about six feet tall. He has short brown hair. He weighs about 180 pounds. He had on khaki shorts and a white tank top."

Witness C: "The guy is Hispanic. He is in his late 20's. I would say he is around 200 pounds. He had tattoos all over his arms. He had on a white t-shirt and blue jeans."

Witness D: "He is a white or Hispanic male in his late 20's. He is around 190 or so pounds and about six feet tall. He had on a white tank top. I can't remember what color his pants were.... they were a light color, maybe brown."

Based on the statements above, Officer Buckley should notice a problem with which description?
Incorrect. Please choose another answer.
Witness C is the only witness to mention tattoos all over the suspect's arms. Such a noticeable description would not have been overlooked by all of the other witnesses. Also, he mentioned the suspect was wearing a t-shirt, while all of the other witnesses stated he was wearing a tank-top.
284. Officer Barker is patrolling a residential area at 01:15 a.m. She observes a vehicle she estimates is traveling at least 20 miles over the posted speed limit. The vehicle also has a head lamp that is burned out. Officer Barker pulls the vehicle over. The driver explains to the officer that he just got a call about an emergency at home and really needs to be on his way. He hands the officer his license. Officer Barker asks him to hand her his registration and insurance. The driver replies, "I really must be on my way." Officer Barker again asks for the man's registration and insurance. The man looks at his glove box for a few moments. He then replies, "Nothing is in there. I don't have it. I need to go!"

Based on the information above, what, if anything, is most likely the man's problem?
Incorrect. Please choose another answer.
The man refuses to look in his glove box for his registration and insurance. If there really is an emergency, the man would quickly provide the requested document and not delay the completion of the traffic stop. Therefore, it is most likely that there is something in the glove box that the man does not want the officer to see.

285. During a shift briefing, the sergeant gives out a series of instructions that the officers in the back of the room have trouble hearing. The rules for the briefing are as follows:

1.  Be quiet during briefing.
2.  Turn radios and cell phones off.
3.  Listen to the briefing and instructions.
4.  Ask questions if you do not understand the briefing or instructions.

What rule should be followed in this situation?
Incorrect. Please choose another answer.
Rule number 4 specifically requires that officers ask questions if they do not understand instructions. Not being able to hear the instructions would require the officers to ask to have them repeated. It is important that officers know what they are doing and doing it correctly at all times. Rule number 3 would not be at issue. The officers in the back of the room are trying to listen but are not able to due to the sergeant not talking loud enough.
286. While on patrol, officers stop a vehicle for speeding. When they approach the vehicle, they notice the driver lights a cigarette and rolls down all of the windows. The driver does not look the officers in the eyes when they are speaking to him. The driver is also leaning away from the officers. The driver explains he is late for his shift and apologizes for speeding. He says he is nervous because he has never been pulled over before. While they are checking his license at their patrol vehicle, they notice he sprays air freshener around himself, and is drinking from a water bottle.

Based on the information above, what is going on with the driver?
Incorrect. Please choose another answer.
The driver is attempting to conceal an odor on his person or in his vehicle. He is using masking techniques in an attempt to prevent the officers from smelling alcohol and/or drugs.
287. The department policy is that officers may cover for another officer if the sergeant oks it. In no case may an on-duty officer cover for another officer who is on duty who wants leave for personal reasons.

You are a new officer assigned to a night shift squad. You have been assigned to this squad a few times, and one of the officers on the squad seems to never violate any policies and always does what he is asked to do. He has a good reputation as being a "seasoned" officer. One day, while you are on duty, he asks if you would cover some calls for him so he can run some personal errands.

What fact requires you to decline the request?
Incorrect. Please choose another answer.
The issue with this situation is that you are on duty. According to the rules, in no case when an officer is on duty may he or she cover for another officer on duty.
288. Indicators for drug activity in a vehicle include, but are not limited to:
  • conflicting stories between occupants of a vehicle,
  • the driver's reason for travel does not make sense,
  • masking odors such as heavy cologne or perfume smells; multiple air fresheners,
  • the smell of fresh paint or bonding materials,
  • excessive, nervous behavior of one or more occupants,
  • multiple items of religious paraphernalia,
  • multiple cell phones,
  • driving under the posted speed limit when approaching a law enforcement vehicle.
Based on the information above, which vehicle is most likely to be carrying illegal drugs?
Incorrect. Please choose another answer.
The driver's explanation makes no sense. Common sense says a person without a job cannot afford to drive across the country to look for work. Also, he has multiple air-fresheners in the vehicle. While this does not mean he is carrying drugs, based on the indicators listed, he is the most likely.
289. Department policy gives priority to calls involving threats to human life. You are a police officer working in a busy district. The following calls are waiting for service. Which call should be taken first in accordance with department policy?
Incorrect. Please choose another answer.
Common sense tells us that the call to 911 with screaming in the background is the priority call. The other calls do not involve the possible danger to human life. The other calls are a minor accident with no reported injuries, a delayed burglary that is not in progress, and minor damage to property.
290. While working a beat you notice several officers out on calls. Judging the potential for danger, which situation would most likely need assistance first?
Incorrect. Please choose another answer.
Officer C would be the best choice to help first based on the potential for danger. His incident poses the greatest chance for a critical incident and potential danger. Officer A's call could be nothing. With the information given, it is not uncommon for people to make loud noises in a park. Officer B and D are taking non-dangerous reports. While it may be polite to help officer D, it should not be done at the cost of public and officer safety.

The following is taken from a department guideline on how officers are to carry out crowd control:
  • Officers shall be professional and respectful and avoid negative verbal engagement with members of a crowd.
  • Verbal abuse against officers shall not constitute a reason for an arrest or use of force.
  • Officers in non-violent crowd situations shall not display or brandish weapons.
  • Officers shall make every effort to ensure that the police mission is accomplished as efficiently and unobtrusively as possible with the highest regard for human dignity and liberty for all persons.
Deputy Davis responds to an explosion at a gas station in a busy area of town. He has been assigned to keep the crowds of onlookers back from the on-going fire. Several people move up to the taped off perimeter and are attempting to get a better view of the fire and injured party. When Deputy Davis orders the onlookers to step back from the tape they refuse. Deputy Davis yells "Get back right now or I'm going to take you losers to jail."
291. Based on the department guideline, Deputy Davis' statement is:
Incorrect. Please choose another answer.
The guidelines state that officers must be respectful to and avoid negative verbal engagement with the crowd. Calling the crowd "losers" and threatening jail is not consistent with this guideline, nor would it be the most efficient way possible to solve the problem in a way that maintains the highest regard for human dignity and liberty.
292. A statement by Deputy Davis to "Please, help me do my job by moving back from the tape, and ask others to move along." would be:
Incorrect. Please choose another answer.
This statement by the deputy would adhere to the guidelines to respect the human dignity of the members of the crowd and to seek an efficient way to solve the problem.
293. An officer has pulled a vehicle over for going 15 miles per hour in a 40 mph area. The vehicle was also swerving. When questioning the driver, the officer notices that the driver's eyes are red. The driver fumbles a bit getting his license out of his wallet. When asked if he has been drinking, the driver says no, that he just stayed up late the night before studying for a college test. The officer is not convinced with this story.

Based on your review of the scenario, what important information did the officer use as evidence of the driver's condition?
Incorrect. Please choose another answer.
The officer is not convinced of the driver's story because staying up late does not explain why the driver was driving so slow or swerving. Other facts support the conclusion that the driver is impaired, including having red eyes and fumbling with his wallet. Common sense suggests the driver is not telling the truth.
294. You have been assigned to handle several calls for service. You are tasked with responding to an animal problem, a car parked in a red zone near a fire hydrant, a report of a party with loud music and a report of a suspicious person that jumped a residential fence into a yard. Department policy is to prioritize calls that involve imminent threats to people or property. Which incident should you respond to first?

Officer Rogers referred to this information when reviewing the following case.

On July 3rd, an Asian female was arrested near the gym. In the description that led to the arrest, a witness described the suspect as an Asian female who looked about 23 years old. She was about 5'4" and weighed about 120 pounds. She had black hair, a tattoo of a butterfly on her ankle, brown shorts and a green tank top.

Based on this description and the information in the four incidents in June, this suspect should also be considered as a suspect in incident number:
Incorrect. Please choose another answer.
It is helpful to use a process of elimination. The suspect would not be the suspect in No. 2 because the suspect in No. 2 had a tattoo on the upper leg. No. 3 and No. 4 can be eliminated because the suspects in those cases are substantially taller than the suspect who has been caught. The suspect who has been caught should also be considered as a suspect in case No. 1 because the age, height and weight are substantially similar and the suspect in both cases has a tattoo on her ankle.

Employees of a police department wear uniforms to be identified as law enforcement authority in society. The uniform also serves an equally important purpose, which is to identify the wearer as a source of assistance in an emergency, crisis or other time of need. Below are a few uniform policies.

Uniform and equipment shall be maintained in a serviceable condition and shall be ready at all times for immediate use. Uniforms shall be neat, clean and appear professionally pressed.

Personnel shall wear only the uniform specified for their rank and assignment. Police officer ranks are as follows:
  • Police Chief
  • Deputy Chief
  • Captain
  • Lieutenant
  • Sergeant
  • Police Officer
Employees shall not loan any portion of the uniform to anyone.

All supervisors will perform periodic inspections of their personnel to ensure conformance to these regulations.

Civilian attire shall not be worn in combination with any part of the uniform that is distinguishable as a police uniform.

Uniforms are only to be worn while on-duty, while in transit to or from work, for court or at other official functions or events.

Employees are not to purchase or drink alcoholic beverages while wearing the official uniform, including any part of the official uniform.

Mirrored sunglasses will not be worn with any official uniform.

Visible jewelry, other than those items listed below, shall not be worn with the uniform unless specifically authorized by the Chief or a designee. Department Vehicle Pursuit Policy

It is the policy of the department that a vehicle pursuit shall be conducted with at least one flashing red or red and blue warning lamps visible from the front, and an audible siren activated on an authorized emergency vehicle.

Deputies are authorized to initiate a pursuit when it is reasonable to believe a suspect is attempting to evade arrest by fleeing in a vehicle that has been given a signal to stop by a police officer.

The following factors individually and collectively shall be considered in deciding whether to initiate or continue a pursuit:
  • Seriousness of the known or reasonably suspected crime and its relationship to community safety.
  • The importance of protecting the public and balancing the known or reasonably suspected offense and the apparent need for immediate capture against the risks to deputies, innocent motorists and others.
  • The identity of the suspect has been verified and there is comparatively minimal risk in allowing the suspect to be apprehended at a later time.
  • Safety of the public in the area of the pursuit, including the type of area, time of day, the amount of vehicular and pedestrian traffic (e.g., school zones), and the speed of the pursuit relative to these factors.
  • Pursuing officer's familiarity with the area of the pursuit.
  • Weather, traffic, and road conditions that unreasonably increase the danger of the pursuit when weighed against the risks resulting from the suspect's escape.
  • Vehicle speeds.
  • Other persons in or on the pursued vehicle
  • Availability of other resources, such as aircraft assistance
No deputy shall pursue a fleeing vehicle solely for a traffic violation or non-violent misdemeanor. Flight from a deputy during an attempt to make a traffic stop will not justify high speed pursuit on its own merit.

This simple statement helps identify your authority to others.

According to the paragraph:
Incorrect. Please choose another answer.
An officer should never assume someone knows they are a police officer. The announcement that an officer is in fact a police officer should precede initial commands.
